Chapter Sixteen

I shared this latest information with Brad as soon as I got home. Even over the phone I could sense his frustration with the way Meredith’s case was being handled.

“I was never told about Tamara Hardy and Nate Broyhill being found together in his SUV when the deputies located them after the murder,” he said. “Now I need to go back to those deputies and find out if those two were actually parked on the side of the street or were stopped as they were leaving the area.”

“Because if they were driving away and pulled over, it might show that they were trying to flee the scene?” I asked, absently stroking Loie, who’d jumped into my lap as soon as I sat on the sofa.

“Right. And so we know how credible Nate Broyhill’s statement is.” Brad’s sigh reverberated through my phone. “Obviously, Ms. Hardy lied to us. Well, I suppose it wasn’t an outright lie, but she certainly withheld information.”

“She never mentioned seeing, much less talking with, Nate Broyhill?”

“Not in any statement I’ve seen,” Brad said. “Thanks for gathering this information, Amy. It can’t be part of the official investigation, of course, but it does provide me with some good leads. I’m definitely going to push for another round of questioning for Broyhill and Hardy, as well as the DeFranzo woman.”

Fosse, leaping up on the sofa, swatted Loie with one paw. “What about Riley Irwin and Davonte Julian? Their stories don’t match up either,” I said as I attempted to separate the two cats before they launched into a wrestling match on my lap.

“I’ve already convinced the Smithsburg department to follow up with those two. Should happen in the next couple of days,” Brad cleared his throat. “You know, it concerns me a little, these folks being questioned again after you’ve talked to them. I worry that if any of them are the killer, they might put two and two together and come after you.”

“I doubt that,” I said, grunting as Fosse’s back paws slammed into my stomach before he bounded off the sofa. “Sorry—trying to wrangle cats.”

“I thought that was a losing proposition from the start.” Amusement lightened Brad’s voice. “Anyway, I just want you to keep an eye out for anything that feels off, like weird text messages or calls, or the sense that someone is following you. Let me know immediately if that sort of thing happens, okay?”

“Don’t worry—you’ll be the first to know,” I said, leaping to my feet at the sound of a crash. “Sorry, got to go. I think the cats are running amok in the kitchen. Talk to you again soon,” I added, then hung up and ran down the hall.

Loie and Fosse looked up at me from the base of one of the cabinets, their faces and paws dusted with white powder. I soon discovered the cause of this indoor snowfall—the metal flour canister lay on the floor, its contents covering the wood-toned tiles as well as the cats.

“Gee thanks, you guys,” I said, trying to decide what to do first, clean the cats or the floor.
